Photo-Imaging: A Complete Guide to Alternative Processes
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Pubns (October, 2002)
Author: Jill Enfield
Average review score:

Buy this book
Photo-Imaging is beautifully written and illustrated--an essential volume for anyone interested in alternative photographic processes. The writing is clear and simple. Jill Enfield makes it easy to experiment with new photographic techniques. There are lots of helpful tips and hints based on Enfield's extensive experience with alternative processes. I particulary like the detailed supplier information she lists.

While I sometimes wished she had included additional historical and chemical details, it's a minor quibble because this book has carefully distilled the essential information needed to get up and running with each process. This book is a great value considering the low cost and the extensive information included. No fluff or filler--just concise information.

Winner of 2002 Golden Light Book Awards Best Technical Book
Photo-Imaging by Jill Enfield has received the 2002 Golden Light Book Awards Best Technical Book Award. The award is sponsored by The Maine Photographic Workshops, The International Film Workshops
and Rockport College. A panel of distinguished jurors reviews books and selects those that make a significant contribution to the art and literature of the medium. Submissions are judged on qualities such as writing, editing, photo reproduction, design and printing, and the contents' overall importance to their perspective mediums. The Jury, which reviews all entries, is comprised of several renowned photographers, filmmakers, publishers, writers and editors.

It's about time...
I've seen Jill Enfield's work frequently in magazines and books, and was thrilled when I found out she was writing her own text. I teach experimental photography at a university, so any book of this nature that comes on the market, I buy. When this came in the mail from Amazon.com (promptly, I might add) I was impressed. Watson Guptill knows how to lay out a textbook so that it appeals to the reader, and is well supported by images, not only with examples of the processes but with "how to" pictures, also. It is user friendly, especially for those who are somewhat newer to the photographic medium and experimental in nature. That said, I learned new things (e.g. the chapter on tintypes) that I will use in my experimental photography class!
These topics are included: black and white infrared, liquid emulsion, enlarging negatives for alternative processes, ink jet transfers, polaroid processes, cyanotypes, kallitypes, platinum printing, palladium printing, tintypes, hand coloring, and other stuff. It is a good combination of what are traditionally termed "alt process" (platinum, cyanotypes, etc.) and what are more experimental things to try.
For this type of book the price at Amazon.com is excellent--most books of this caliber range from [$$$].

Enfield, CT
This book is terrific. There are plenty of pictures and there are chapters from all the towns that make up Enfield: Scitico, Thompsonville and Hazardville. Even Shaker Pines is here!

Thompsonville is dominated by the Carpet Mill history and the immigrants that most of us residents descended from.

Absolutely excellent!!

Awesome - The best start-to-finish ASP book
After going thru a number of other asp books I find this book to be the premier source of information on the subject. The topics covered are from the ground-zero level without spoon-feeding yet the material will help build a foundation for advanced application needs. It is obvious that for the advanced development one should seek specialized books addressing the topics - eg: ADO, Java & Active-X, ExchangeServer intergration etc. Compelling Reading !!

Very Useful so far in learning to tie HTML to ASP w/vbscript
The short time I have been using this book I find that I can find very useful information for what I need to do with ASP. Very good examples. Very well layed out book. The number of yellow stickies shows me that I have found useful and specific examples relevant to my needs. The book uses VBScript which is just what I want. Even walks you through creating a COM component.

Undoubtedly the best ASP book on the market.
I purchased this book knowing only a little about object-oriented programming and VBScript but hoping to become proficient in ASP in a very short time. This book was the perfect answer - clear explanations, good examples, solid code -- and all at the right pace. I read the first four chapters and was writing efficient interactive web pages for database access the next day. I highly recommend this reference.

British Enfield Rifles, Vol. 1, The SMLE (No.1) Mk I and Mk III
Published in Paperback by North Cape Publications (15 October, 1997)
Authors: Charles R. Stratton and Charles R. Stratton
Average review score:

Author hits the mark.
Charles (Skip) Stratton is well known amongst gun collectors for his articles on collecting Lee Enfields. I was interested to discover that he had published books on collecting Lee Enfields. His books is aimed (no pun) specifically at the collector whom needs to know how to pull the bolt apart and to put it back together again, without wandering into the sphere and expertice of an armourer. Stratton makes no attempt to explain how to undertake tasks best left to a gunsmith or amourer. By reading this book a collector will be able to say recognise the difference between an early and late production nose cap.

A positive feature of his works is that the text is supported by very clear uncluttered line drawings that reveal more detail than what a photograph would do. Even swivel screws have their own illustrations showing the difference between the first and second variations.

The book is written in a logical direct manner, and initially starts with how to identify the place of production, the range of serial numbers for each year and what various stampings on wood and metal indicate. Australian and other Commonwealth collectors must be mindful that collectors in the United States may not instantly appreciate that VR means Victoria Regina and not Vancouver Rifles.

The authors success is in my opinion is due to his setting out to do one thing, make a great hand book for collectors that anticipates the questions a collector will ask.

Great book to identify your SMLE
This book was great in helping me identify the details of my SMLE III, including decypering all the symbols. It also provided a nice history lesson on the rifle. I would recommend for collectors, those who own one, or those that just have an interest in them.

Lee Enfield Rifle I.D. Master Piece
This is the the book to get if you want to know what the Lee Enfield Number One is all about. Read this book before and after you buy your Lee Enfield Number One(MkI or Mk III). Charles Stratton details much needed information for you to get a detailed understanding of your Lee Enfield. Stratton also gives expert advice on details for collectors. This advice centers around tips that describe rare and collectable models of the Lee Enfield. He simply tells you what to look for in detail. This book will also simply give reading enjoyment to any WWI and II history buff.

British Enfield Rifles: Nra Handbook
Published in Paperback by Natl Rifle Assn (December, 1992)
Average review score:

Reprint of the history of British Rifles
For the average Lee Enfield owner it will be an interesting thing to know that its older brothers where even flintlocks. Did you know that the british laborers planted walnut trees in 1800 and that this was the basis for a succesion of fine guns.

The first part of this reprint tells the history of the rifles and in the last part it deals with questions from readers, including exploded views of the No1 and No4 rifle.

Lots of little details like "Enfield" indicating the type of rifling and not the place of the facotry, types of amunitions in charts etc.

If you have a Lee Enfield this is a book you can not mis.

The Enfield Connection

Author: John M., Jr. Kevin
Average review score:

Sleepless Night
I sat down with the intention of just starting this book about 10pm one night, by 2:45am i had read the entire story. Mr. Kevin has accomplished the blend of fact and fiction very well. It made for interesting scenes as the three time travellers found themselves seeing homes that in our day are barely standing if at all. During the battle scenes i felt genuine fear for the safety of the characters, even knowing in the back of my mind that they had to come through it alive. I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Kevin, and eagerly await his next effort.

Great BOOK
THIS BOOK IS THE TYPE OF THAT WHEN YOU START READING YOU CAN'T PUT IT DOWN, A MUST READ! HUZZAH BUCKTAILS, CO.F

What a great book. Huzzah BUCKTAILS
I am a Civil War reenactor and I think this book was well written. Once you start reading the book you can't put it down. It's about time someone writes a book about the 150th PVI Bucktails.

Professional IE4 Programming

VB Scripting - say goodbye to cross browser compatability!
A fine book for Intranet development - a seriously flawed effort for Internet work. All material is covered using VB script, which is utterly worthless if your trying to develop a site that works with both Navigator and MSIE. Though you can complete every task discussed in this book with either VB or JavaScript, the authors summarily dismiss JavaScript. Don't purchase this book if you plan to develop sites that work across the browser divide!

Decent IE4 book
The reader from Raleigh, NC obviously didn't read the title of the book before purchasing. This is an "IE4" book, not a Netscape, or any other third-rate browser book. If you want cross-browser support, than DON'T buy a book that is named "IE4 Programming".

I though that this book gave decent coverage and was worth the $.

Simply written, generous references in table format
I appreciate the authors' simple style--direct-to-the-point in simple English (unlike the abstract prose used by experienced programmers who lack the gift of of sharing information in simple terms). The book has lots of examples and screen shots, and with generous lists of properties, methods and events. The indices at the back of the book serves as a reference when done with the entire book. This book is a must in every Web programmer's library.
